Matthew 18:1–9 reveals that greatness in God’s kingdom is anchored in humility, repentance, and childlike dependence, rather than in status or influence. This sermon addresses the destructive nature of sin, urging believers to confront it decisively to walk in holiness and fulfill their purpose. Sin not only corrupts the individual but also devastates communal witness, making it essential for followers of Christ to take serious action against both visible and hidden sins. Sin is presented as the root cause of human suffering, corrupting every part of the human person and devastating both personal lives and communal witness. Jesus issues a severe warning to His followers: while temptation is inevitable, accountability for leading oneself or others into sin is unavoidable. Through vivid metaphors—cutting off a hand or plucking out an eye—Christ commands aggressive, intentional action against both visible sins (actions and habits) and hidden sins of the heart (pride, lust, bitterness). These warnings flow from God’s love, not cruelty, as He desires His people to avoid eternal separation and live transformed lives. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, believers are not trapped in sin but given real power to repent, pursue holiness, and preserve the credibility of the gospel through obedient living.
